As years go by, and profits decrease, substitutions and processes replace quality and natural ingredients. The goal is to save time and money. Man made materials such as plastic and chemicals are the most heavily used substitutes.
A few great examples:
- Why do you think you can buy a $2 bottle of wine? Do you really believe that the wine you are buying is high quality grapes in which an experienced wine maker hand blends the mixture? NO! It’s some so so or even crappy grapes with chemicals added. These chemicals make the mixture taste good regardless of the grape crop for the year specified on the bottle. There are always good and bad years with natural produce even with some human controlled factors.
- How about milk, soda, and baby bottles. Although plastic may be better if you drop the container on the floor; how many times have you dropped the milk? There is research to suggest that some plastics release harmful chemicals into our foods. Are you worried?
- Look at all the issues with our food supply these days. Contamination, diseases, pesticides, and outbreaks. Have regulations been relaxed or are we just not following the rules?
- Restaurants are the worst when it comes to substitutions. You most certainly DO NOT want to know what is in fast food. In fact this problem goes much beyond fast food. Chain restaurants substitute many artificial ingredients for natural ingredients. Many family run restaurants can’t afford high quality ingredients so they substitute lower quality choices. Mostly due to the cost and unavailability.
The good news is that people have the choice to choose quality. The bad news is many people can’t afford quality. In all cases, you have this formula to follow.
You can only choose 2:
It seems the world has reached a point where we are getting back to our roots and natural ingredients. We are trying to replace the synthetic with the natural where ever possible. This is a major shift in thinking and will take time to filter through all our food sources. The one draw back is that prices will remain higher, but you will be putting better and natural foods in your body.
So what is most important to you? You can pick 2 of the 3 listed above. What do you choose? What can you choose? What are you forced to choose?

I would rather quality food and pay the price. I would gladly cut out other things in my life to maintain the quality. For example… do I want a cheeseburger from a fast food place or an organic grass fed patty from whole foods? I pick the natural product without hesitation. If you are what you eat then I want to eat natural.
